This month felt like a long, quiet hum — low on big launches, high on housekeeping. Mostly maintenance, backlog pruning, and a few satisfying small wins that kept the world from getting noisier.
Open-source & repo maintenance
- Daily-ish maintenance across a handful of orgs (circleci-tools, bitflyer-tools, irasutoya-tools) and my own projects. Most work was small PR approvals, Dependabot branch deletions, and cleanup rather than feature work.
- Mass approvals across days: e.g., sweep on Aug 4 (9 small PRs), repeated lightweight approvals on Aug 3–11 and throughout the month.
- Reverted an OpenSSL bump and added a guard: approved #1051 then reverted via #1063 and opened #1064 to stop Dependabot re-proposing it (Aug 8–9).
- CI identity cleanup to standardize Actions commit authors: deariary/github-weekly-reporter#152 and mirrored changes across several repos (Aug 11).
- Repeated Dependabot pruning — branches like
undici-7.29.0,fast-uri-3.1.5,json-2.21.2, etc., got deleted many times over the month.
- Technical fixes with immediate payoff:
- DroidFlyer: bumped compileSdk → 37 to unblock okhttp-android 5.5.0 (PR #540, Aug 26). Felt practical and satisfying — small change, tangible CI/build win.
- Norimaki CI: gave test job more memory to prevent JVM/daemon starvation (PR #466, Aug 26). Quiet, useful ops work.
- Little wins:
- Long-standing external PR merged: update to games.yaml in ligurio/awesome-ttygames that had been open since 2025-09-09 (merged Aug 2). Felt like a slow but welcome resolution.
- Starred and explored lots of repos in one morning (Aug 17) — a pleasant distraction / inspiration session (favorites from hanhan1978 and togishima).
Product, backlog, and planning
- Big backlog cleanups and scope pruning felt like the theme: fewer plans, clearer board.
- Canceled 19 Linear tickets for JRNL (Aug 16) to shrink scope across LP, compliance, and schema work (examples: JRNL-72, JRNL-76, JRNL-184, JRNL-126).
- Shelved the Bluesky integration settings page — marked JRNL-372 won't-do (Aug 23). A deliberate stepping-back rather than forgetting it.
- Nudged Facebook/Meta launch requirements back onto the board: JRNL-306 (business verification + app review still blocking going live; surfaced again on Aug 21).
- Features kept in parking-lot / shaping stage:
- Gender/voice setting work stayed in backlog but got clearer specs (JRNL-483, JRNL-484, JRNL-485; Aug 25).
- Batch API processing (overnight submit/morning collect) as a cost-saving option remained parked but defined (JRNL-274; Aug 25).
- Product signals:
- deariary/frontend issue count bounced — multiple jumps and drops (notable: up to 53, frequent +6/-5 swings). Triage is clearly due; those numbers added a quiet low-level unease.
Blog, writing, and content
- A real productivity spike: batch-merged 21 blog PRs on Aug 5.
- Topics covered: persona essays (ADHD, student, film, memory, travel, parenting), product stances (e.g., "why deariary has no streaks"), privacy objection piece ("I don't want AI reading my life"), an engineering note, and a how‑to (Obsidian daily notes via webhook).
- Felt energizing — clearing the queue and shipping a content slate through mid-August. Proud of the push to get those out together.
- A quiet month otherwise for writing — no new posts from me on Bluesky and the social side was largely dormant.
Metrics, social, and rhythm
- GitHub follower churn was small but noticeable: quiet ups and downs instead of any sustained trend.
- Notable spikes: +13 followers on Aug 14, +10 on Aug 26. Several days with -1 or -2. End-of-month around ~3,679–3,683 range.
- Following count fluctuated (notably +24 on Aug 30 due to some automated or deliberate follows).
- Social silence: Bluesky was essentially dormant for the whole month — no posts or likes from me, and the Bluesky settings page was shelved.
- Emotional rhythm: the month felt low-energy but steady — fewer launches, more caretaking. That steadiness lowered stress, even if it sometimes felt like slow motion.
Closing paragraph: This was a "keep the lights on" month: maintenance, pruning, and a couple of tidy technical fixes rather than big new things. There's a quiet satisfaction in clearing queues (21 blog posts, Dependabot detritus, 19 canceled tickets) and in small infrastructure wins; it leaves me feeling lighter and more focused about what to pick up next.
